My daughter has always had a strong fashion sense. At the age of three she had seven favorite dresses and insisted upon wearing them all at the same time. The order of the layers changed and the actual number varied with the weather, but I don’t recall her wearing fewer than three. The quizzical looks from other parents were balanced the comfort of knowing that there were several layers of cloth between her and childhood’s abrasions
At four, The Wizard of Oz became her favorite movie. Co-incidentally, Grandmother had sent a simply cut dress with blue and white checks and fashion changed. It became “Dorothy’s dr ess” and my daughter “became” Dorothy.
By the age of five, one dress had won “top” honors. It became known as “blue ribbon dress” because it was blue and had a pattern of pink ribbons. No day could begin until it was donned. At day’s end it was placed ceremoniously by the bed (and later surreptitiously whisked off to the laundry) ready for the following morning.
My daughter is now in high school, and her fashion choices are more conventional, albeit with her unique style. The images of her early years are preserved in the memory quilt made from those childhood garments. It is a quilt of stories, that one day may comfort and entertain another generation.
A memory quilt can be custom made featuring one or several fabrics. The first step is a consultation. Please contact:
